1.Why need MGO Cooling
Backgroud:
IMO have ratified 200 NM of the North American coastline as a SECA area by the Aug 2012.
ECA area – 0.1% Sulphur effective from January 1st 2015.
2020 0.5 % sulphur emission for global limit.
After January 1, 2015, a lot of troubles in conjuction with MGO use by 0.1% sulfur regulation indroduction in ECA were reported.
Such as:
Big leak occurred in MGO having low viscosity even if no leak in HFO.
Stick of FO pump during change over HFO to MGO. Thermal shock to engine due to rapid temperature change of fuel.
2.Cooling medium for MGO cooling
Sea water cooling with plate heat exchanger(PHE) based on 32℃ SW
Fresh water cooling with plate heat exchanger, based on 36℃ FW
3.Cooling principle

MGO cooling system is an important and indispensable part to change-over unit.
As well-known factor, the viscosity can be raised by cooling of the fuel, after which the MGO / MDO fuels can then be used to ensure safe and reliable machinery performance.
Currently, the use of chillers (chilled water) in an external fuel supply system, called MGO / MDO Cooling System, is strongly recommended and applied to the marine industry.
